Gerry Jensen

My painting philosophy is to be inspired by what is around me and to commit to the discipline of painting every day – I don’t mind what the subject is – at the moment I have a fascination for painting figures.

I work in a variety of mediums but pastels are my favourite as I love the immediacy of it you pop down a lovely mark and bang there it is but I enjoy watercolour and oils as well.   I have given this a bit of thought over the years and came to the conclusion that I don’t want to be known as just an oil painter/watercolourist/pastellist because each of these mediums has something special to offer.

My style would be mainly traditional with an impressionistic twist  -it is fascinating to pick up a pastel stick, brush or pencil and watch as the idea unfolds – sometimes a bit of magic happens but the process to me is what makes the journey so exciting.

I am mainly self taught but hold an Endorsed Certificate in Painting & Drawing from TAFE Tas.

Over the past few years I have won over 50 awards including Pastel and Watercolour awards at TasArt, the 2011 Rotary ArtEx major prize and in 2009 the Launceston Art Society’s Meandering Exhibition Major prize – each award be it big or small is such a thrill.

I love where I am now painting wise but as I get older I want to simplify how I paint – become more impressionistic and see where it all goes.
